For a fan, the pinnacle of liking a band is seeing them live. While the first round of summer concerts is over, there are plenty of tours and opportunities to see big name bands remaining. The hard rock genre has a lot of heavy hitters and with spring and early summer there have been plenty of new releases bands are looking to support in front of a live audience.

One of the bands that everyone should obviously see that’s not on the list is Black Sabbath. The reason I left them off is because they last toured in 2012 (2005 before that) briefly before Tony Iommi was diagnosed with lymphoma and I have never seen them.

Outside of dealing with a crowd, seeing a band live tends to be the purest form of their music. No mastering, no pro tools (usually) and no holds barred. Here’s a list of 10 hard rock bands that should definitely be on the list as MUST SEE.

After a flurry of concerts in the month of May, I’ve been asking myself, what’s next? I’ve been maintaining my music column, doing reviews and covering news for two separate outlets so it’s been busy. However, there aren’t really many concerts in my area that I’m interested in.

Kansas City is being dodged by the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, Megadeth’s Gigantour, the Carnival of Madness tour and Rockstar’s Uproar Festival. The only two concerts I’m remotely interested in are the Masters of Madness tour featuring Marilyn Manson and Alice Cooper, which is sold out, and a show featuring Rob Zombie, Machine Head and Amon Amarth (which is the main make-up of Mayhem) the day after the Mayhem Festival finishes. Seeing concerts with your friends makes for a great time, and can create memories that last a lifetime.

One of the longest lasting concert memories was from Projekt Revolution 2004, which featured Snoop Dogg, Korn, and Linkin Park. Despite being in late August, there were terrible storms all day and into the evening. The show was at the Riverport in St. Louis, and there were two carloads of us going to the show. One car included my best friends, Paul and Marc, and myself. The other car contained our friend Eddie, his wife and another friend. On the drive from Hannibal, Mo., to St. Louis, the other car hydroplaned and ended up in the median so the adventure kicked off early. Brandon Geist, Revolver Magazine’s Shreditor-in-Chief, took the time to answer some questions regarding the Golden Gods Awards May 2. Here’s that interview, uncut and in its entirety!

Andy Lyons: First and foremost, just want to say thanks in advance for taking the time to answer these. I really appreciate it from not only a fan’s perspective, but as a young journalist looking to make a career in music journalism, this is the pinnacle for a guy like me!

AL: First question, having the Golden Gods as summer concert season kicks off I’m sure can be a pain in the ass. For example, I live in mid-Missouri and I know the Deftones were in Springfield last Monday, St, Louis on Wednesday, at the Golden Gods on Thursday and then in Memphis on Friday. What kind of planning goes into an event like the Golden Gods? Securing bands to perform and trying to ensure bands are there to accept the awards they win takes a ton of coordination, what do you guys do to keep it all together?

Brandon Geist: Yeah, as that inane commercial says, it’s all about logistics. And it is a fucking pain in the ass. Believe me, there are many excel spread sheets being created to keep track of everything. One of the reasons we have the Gods when we do is actually to just beat the heart of the summer festival season, both in the US and even more importantly overseas. If a band is touring in the US during the Gods, at least they could theoretically fly in just for our show—though we have had artists fly in from overseas just for the Gods in the past (for example, the year Asking Alexandria performed, they flew in from Europe just to play; also, one year Jonathan Davis flew in from Brazil just to make an appearance). I think the main thing is now the show is important enough and respected enough and known enough that is really is like the GRAMMYs for pop music or the Oscars for movies, where if you are those industries, you CANNOT miss it. So whether you are on tour in another part of the country or world, it doesn’t matter; you need to be there. (more…)
